Official Launch of the United Nations Global Seaweed Initiative (UNGSI)

New York, 23 September 2025 – A new global partnership has been launched to harness the power of seaweed for a more sustainable future. The United Nations Global Seaweed Initiative (UNGSI) was officially introduced at a UN General Assembly (UNGA) side event in New York, marking a milestone in efforts to advance climate action, food security, and ocean regeneration through seaweed innovation.

Led by Madagascar, Indonesia, and France, UNGSI unites governments, industry, science, and civil society to strengthen collaboration, standards, financing, and capacity-building across the seaweed sector.

The Initiative builds on momentum from UNOC-3 and is supported by key partners including the Global Seaweed CoalitionFAOUNCTADUNIDOIOC-UNESCO, and the UN Global Compact. Together, they aim to unlock seaweed’s full potential as a nature-based solution contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through this global collaboration, UNGSI seeks to scale seaweed’s contribution to climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and regenerative ocean solutions — ensuring the sector grows inclusively and responsibly.
