IGCN, BRIN, and SBTi Encourage the Corporate Sector to Strengthen Science-Based Climate Targets Towards a Net-Zero Indonesia

Jakarta, 15 October 2025 — UN Global Compact Network Indonesia (IGCN), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) collaborated to hold a Roundtable Discussion titled “Achieving Corporate Climate Ambition in Indonesia: Understanding SBTi Fundamentals & Sectoral Pathways” at the BJ Habibie Auditorium, BRIN, Jakarta.

The event brought together more than a hundred business leaders, sustainability practitioners, academics, and policymakers to strengthen their understanding of science-based climate targets and encourage the private sector’s contribution to Indonesia’s net-zero goals.

As a nation committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, the business sector plays a crucial role in accelerating national decarbonization. However, many companies still face challenges in understanding various global climate standards and frameworks, as well as the practical steps to set credible targets aligned with national policies.

“Cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure that climate mitigation efforts are based on science and can be measured in real terms,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Anugerah Widiyanto, BSc., M.Eng., Deputy for Development Policy at BRIN, in his remarks.

Andi P. Rahim, Secretary General & Acting Executive Director of IGCN, stated:

“As part of the UN Global Compact, IGCN is committed to supporting Indonesian businesses in taking credible, science-based climate action. Through this discussion, we aim to bridge the knowledge gap and strengthen collaboration among members toward the net-zero target.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Widiatmini Sih Winanti M.Si, Head of the Research Group on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Sustainability at BRIN, emphasized the importance of research and innovation in accelerating the green transition:

“Innovation and research are key to helping businesses identify effective low-carbon solutions that are relevant to the needs of each sector.”

From the global perspective, Amanda Skeldon, Building Engagement Specialist at SBTi, highlighted the importance of science-based standards to ensure the private sector’s contribution to the global goals of the Paris Agreement:

“Science-based targets provide clear and credible guidance for companies to reduce emissions in line with climate science. This approach ensures accountability and accelerates meaningful climate action across industries.”

The event featured presentations from IGCN, BRIN, and SBTi, followed by a multi-sector panel discussion with representatives from the forestry, finance, and manufacturing industries. It concluded with a focus group discussion on the implementation of science-based targets and opportunities for multi-stakeholder collaboration.

During the panel discussion, Dicky Nugraha, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Communication at Dynapack Asia, shared:

“As part of our commitment to becoming the Most Sustainable Plastic Manufacturer in Asia, Dynapack Asia continues to strengthen climate action through comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets across Scope 1, 2, and 3. We aim to reduce absolute emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to our 2021 baseline, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway.”

The outcomes of this discussion will serve as the foundation for the development of IGCN’s Net-Zero and Climate Program, including summary reports, key findings, and follow-up plans such as sectoral dialogues and technical workshops for members interested in deepening their understanding of science-based target implementation.

Through this initiative IGCN, BRIN, and SBTi reaffirm their joint commitment to supporting Indonesia’s private sector in aligning business strategies with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and the Paris Agreement, as well as strengthening Indonesia’s contribution to global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.
